In 2009 the U.S. Mint issued new designs for the cent in honor of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. To celebrate, we’re offering an 8-coin set of major U.S. penny types over the past 150 years. Included are the first Indian Head “white cent” of 1859, struck in copper-nickel (and known as the “nick” in its day); the last Indian Head bronze cent of 1909, whose Union Shield/Oak Wreath reverse (introduced in 1860, on the eve of the Civil War) differed from the Laurel Wreath reverse of 1859; the first 1909 Lincoln cent date of the longest coin series in U.S. history, struck for the Lincoln centennial; the first 1959 “Lincoln Memorial” cent, a type retired in 2008; and the four 2009 issues with one-year-only reverse engravings honor the legendary president’s birthplace, formative years, professional life and presidency. Grades range from well-traveled Good to lustrous Brilliant Uncirculated.
