1880-P & 1900-P Morgan Silver Dollars Very Fine |
1880 Philadelphia Morgan DollarIssued just two years after the Morgan silver dollar's introduction in 1878, the 1880 Philadelphia Morgan had relatively high mintage of 12.6 million. But today it's a relative scarcities. The reason is that tremendous numbers were lost in later U.S. government melts during the world wars - hugely disproportionate to other mints' issues of the day. Although fewer Morgans were struck at San Francisco in 1880, those massive melts have made the Philadelphia issue much scarcer today. In nicely detailed Very Fine quality or better, over five times as many 1880-S Morgans survive as no-mintmark Morgans of the principal Philadelphia Mint.
Echoes of centennial celebrations were still in the air when the first 1900 Morgan silver dollars emerged from the principal Philadelphia Mint. The no-mintmark 1900 Morgan dollar's production was far below the late-1880's Philadelphia outputs. And today it's estimated that up to four times as many of individual 1880s issues survive than the 1900 Morgan in the nicely detailed Very Fine quality we offer or higher grades. Huge numbers were lost in 20th century U.S. government melts.
