The 1927-S Peace dollar mintage was a tiny fraction of some earlier outputs in the series. Its 866,000 production was less than 5% of the 1922-1923 averages. And only a very small portion of these Peace dollars survive today in About Uncirculated condition. AU coins possess original luster, with merely a trace of wear at highest points. Sometimes the price gap between AU and BU is as slight as the quality difference. But for this 1927-S issue, BU quality regularly sells for $325.

Peace dollar mintages were declining in 1927, as the quota set by Congress neared. The Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco mintages produced a total of just 2.9 million coins, less than 4% of the first three-mint output in 1922. BUs for this 1927-D issue sell for $325, but our one-step lower About Uncirculated quality, with original luster and just a trace of wear at high points is much more affordable.
