Far fewer U.S. proof sets were issued in the 1950's than in succeeding decades. One of the most affordable by far is the 1957 set, whose 1.2 million mintage was much lower than later U.S. proof set outputs, which soared to as high as 4 million. A good number of these sets were broken up to obtain individual Franklin silver half dollar proofs, so even fewer intact sets are available today.
