1976 U.S. 40% Silver Proof Set 3-Coin |
|
In 1976, for the first time in our history, three different U.S. Mint coin designs honored a single event: the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Each unique reverse engraving was created by a different artist and never again appeared on American coinage. These 40% silver coins were struck by the San Francisco Mint exclusively in proof sets; some sets were broken up to obtain individual coins, so fewer intact sets survive today. Superlative proof quality features double-struck engravings and dazzling mirror fields.
