This colorful and affordable dollar coin commemorates Shark Bay, one of Australia’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with a charming engraving of the Dugong Sea Cow. Minted by the esteemed Perth Mint, using technology in which color is actually sealed on the coin, it is part of the new “Celebrate Australia” series. Shark Bay, an area of major zoological importance, is home to about 10,000 dugongs, around 10% of the world’s population. The large marine creature is the world’s only strictly-marine herbivorous mammal and is considered vulnerable to extinction. Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse.
