Interesting Facts About Early U.S. Dollars:
-- The Seated Liberty silver dollar was the first U.S. Mint dollar to circulate widely in American commerce.
-- The Seated Liberty silver dollar was minted at all four U.S. Mints, Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans and San Francisco. The mintmark is on the reverse below the eagle's talons.
-- In 1866, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse of the Seated Liberty dollar.
-- The U.S. Trade Silver Dollar is one of the most fascinating and unusual coins in our history. Not only is it the largest classic U.S. Mint silver dollar, it was the only American coin struck primarily for use outside the country.
-- Chinese merchants preferred large silver dollars, including the Mexican silver 8 reale, which contained more silver than regular U.S. silver dollars.
-- In 1873 the U.S. government began striking its own oversize China Trade silver dollars, whose silver content slightly exceeded that of the Mexican silver 8 reales.
-- The U.S. Trade Dollar was an immediate hit in the Orient but created controversy at home since its issuance halted the production of regular silver dollars.
-- Many U.S. Trade dollars bears chopmarks of Chinese merchants, as proof of use in the China Trade.
