South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands 2011 King Penguin |
|
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a remote and inhospitable collection of islands in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. The world’s frozen wilderness, including these polar islands and their inhabitants are highlighted in the BBC television series The Frozen Planet. One featured species is the King Penguin, the second largest species of penguin. The male King Penguin incubates the egg and once it is laid he cares for it, going more than a month without food. The female penguin goes to the open sea and later returns to take her turn keeping the egg warm. Once the chick is hatched it is cared for by both parents. Shown is a King Penguin with his downy chick as well as the official BBC Frozen Planet logo. Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of this copper-nickel issue.
