The most famous change in the Morgan silver dollar series came shortly after its initial 1878 release, when an ornithologist contested the eagle's original eight tailfeathers. George T. Morgan then prepared master dies with seven tailfeathers. Some remaining "8-Tailfeather" dies were overpunched with the new "7-Tailfeather" hub and the new image did not totally cover the previous one, creating a third "7-over-8" variety.
