U.S. 1893 Columbus Silver Half Dollar Extra Fine |
Congress authorized this historic coin for the 400th anniversary of Columbus' epic history-changing voyage. It was struck to help fund the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, whose opening was delayed until 1893. The minting of this first U.S. commemorative coin began in 1892 and ended in 1893, the date we offer. The Columbus portrait was based on a statue in Madrid. The Santa Maria of the reverse was modeled on a replica of Columbus' flagship that sailed across the Atlantic and appeared at the Exposition. Below are hemispheres of the Old and New Worlds inspired by the famous design on the Spanish-American 8 reales silver dollar used in the 13 Colonies and early U.S.A. Sharply detailed Extra Fine quality. 30.6mm
