The beautiful dime was designed by Adolph A. Weinman, who also created the popular Walking Liberty Half Dollar. “Mercury” is actually a misnomer for this “Winged Hat Liberty” dime that emerged during World War I. The wings were intended to represent freedom of thought, a constitutionally guaranteed American liberty.
