Introduced not long after President Eisenhower's passing, the Ike dollar revived the big traditional 38mm size and completed the presidential designs for regular U.S. coins (Lincoln cent through JFK half dollar, previously). Only 6% of the short-lived series was struck in 40% silver (coins issued directly to collectors and dealers), while the vast majority was minted in copper-nickel for use in U.S. commerce. The original "Eagle on Moon" reverse was a tribute to America's space program, which began under Ike's administration and climaxed in the historic manned landing on the Moon in 1969. This impressive engraving was struck in 40% silver only in the first four
