The 1974 proof set, a key low-mintage issue of the 1970's, introduced elegant frosted engravings contrasted with mirror backgrounds. The then-new look captivated the American public and became the standard for U.S. proof sets. The 1978 proof set would become the last to include a regular-issue traditional-size dollar proof. Its mintage was just 3,127,781, the lowest from 1976 through 1983.
