This handsome commemorative issue presents a sensitive portrait of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics. Her sister Rosemary Kennedy was mentally disabled. Eunice's life's work of placing mental retardation onto the national agenda reached its apex with the founding of the Special Olympics in 1968. On the reverse of the coin is the Special Olympics Medal and a rose with the Shriver quote "As we hope for the best in them, hope is reborn in us."
