U.S. $2 1/2 Liberty 1840-1907 Certified MS62 |
Only 12.2 million of the $2 1/2 “Coronet Liberty” quarter eagle gold coins were struck over seven decades. That’s vastly fewer than the $5, $10 and $20 Liberty gold coins of the same period — and even lower than the very short-lived 1849-1854 “Coronet Liberty” gold dollar’s total mintages. Even after the Gold Rush, U.S. gold coin mintages were comparatively low. The large majority of 19th century U.S. gold coin mintages were well under 1 million. Even the highest annual mintages rarely produced one gold coin for every 50 Americans then living.
Huge government melts after the recall of each coin type left only a tiny fraction available for collectors. In fact, reliable numismatic opinion holds that only about 1% of original Coronet Liberty gold mintages survive today in acceptable condition.
The splendid “Coronet Liberty” engraving was the longest-lasting gold coin design in U.S. Mint history. The famous crowned Liberty obverse and Eagle with Shield reverse originated on U.S. gold coins in 1838. As America’s most prestigious coins, they were designed and engraved with infinite care and remain true works of art. These superlative designs continued on American gold coins until 1908 — for an unparalleled seven decades. Our choice of 1840-1907 date.
