Introduced in the 2000 millennium year, the compact Sacagawea dollar promised to revive the $1 coin in commerce. Its bright golden color made it easily distinguishable from the quarter, as the short-lived copper-nickel Susan B. Anthony dollar had not been. But the coin still felt like a quarter in pocket or purse, and the public didn't cotton to it. Soon its use was largely confined to bus fares and coin machines. Its mintages drastically dropped and its use in commerce virtually ceased. Several years ago, the U.S. Mint decided to continue issuing Sacagawea dollars only in limited-mintage collector editions. Our collection includes all 18 Brilliant Uncirculated Philadelphia ("P" mintmark) and Denver ("D") issues and all 9 finest-quality proof releases. 26.5mm
