The first U.S. coin to commemorate the judicial branch of government honors the 250th anniversary of Chief Justice John Marshall’s birth. Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice, was the longest-serving in the history of the Supreme Court and his dominance and influence are still felt today. He was instrumental in establishing the court’s power to overturn laws passed by Congress which violate the Constitution. The reverse features an engraving of the Old Supreme Court Chamber.
