Even in its own time, the unique "Coronet Liberty" 3 cent nickel was never very familiar, because only a limited number were struck. In a 25-date span, from 1865 to 1889, just 32 million were issued by the U.S. Mint. Major designs are visible on our well-traveled Good quality. In 1883, the new 5 cent nickel reverse displayed only the Roman numeral "V" for the 5 cent denomination. But the nickels were virtually identical in size and look to the then-current U.S. $5 Liberty gold coin. So swindlers began to gold-plate the new 1883 "no cents" nickels to pass off as $5 gold pieces. Our Fine quality is well-preserved.
