Gold is a relatively soft metal, so to decrease wear on circulating gold coins the U.S. Mint introduced "intaglio" (below-the-surface) engravings for this series. The stoical Indian Chief and proud American Eagle designs were never again repeated. This $5 gold series' total production was only about one-quarter that of the earlier "Coronet Liberty" gold half eagle. Except for a token number left for collectors, the Treasury recalled those in circulation during the Depression. Brilliant Uncirculated. Date range 1908-1929. Our choice of date. 22.5mm
