U.S. Braided Hair Cent Fine & 3 Cent Nickel Fine |
Fine-Quality 1865-1889 Liberty 3 Cent Piece
Obsolete for well over a century, this historic coin was introduced after the Civil War, when super-hard nickel was no longer needed for armaments. Its unique Liberty is one of the prettiest in U.S. coinage. Lesser Very Good quality sells for $49.50 in a competitor’s catalog.
U.S. “Braided Hair Liberty” 1839-1857 Large Cent
This “big copper” weighs almost four times as much as later small cents. Early U.S. Mint cents were modeled on big British copper pennies of the day. That’s why they were called “pennies,” a name that stuck even though their official denomination was always “cent.” They were often nailed to new homes as good luck charms. Both in well preserved Fine quality. Our choice of date. 17.9mm & 27.5mm
