This first small cent used in American commerce set the size standard for all future U.S. pennies. It was also the nation's first copper-nickel coin - originally known as the white cent, nickel or nick. The spectacular Flying Eagle engraving caused minting problems, which led to the coin's quick retirement in 1858. The antebellum reverse combined the North's corn and wheat with the South's cotton and tobacco. Our Good quality circulated during the Civil War. 19mm
