The U.S. Mint’s famously meticulous Chief Engraver Charles Barber spent a lot of time and effort perfecting his Liberty personification, which has been rated one of the most beautiful engravings in American coinage. Liberty wears the ancient Phrygian slave cap, emblematic of hard-bought freedom. The beribboned laurel wreath circling the cap honors the nation’s attainments. The reverse’s magnificent Presidential Seal shows an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows of preparedness. Our Good to Very Good coins each might have bought a big dinner in their day.
