Introduced to wild acclaim for the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, this first issue's mintage was abruptly halted three days after release. Newspapers had complained that designer Victor D. Brenner's "VDB" initials on the reverse were too large. A second type was quickly prepared without the offending initials (which were restored in 1918 in smaller form on the obverse side). Own a short-lived original in Uncirculated quality, as Americans first saw it.
