In the Morgan dollar's 1878 first year of issue, the eagle's original eight tailfeathers were disputed. George T. Morgan then prepared master dies with seven tailfeathers, corresponding to his original conception. But some remaining "8-Tailfeather" dies were overpunched with the new "7-Tailfeather" hub and the new image did not totally cover the previous one. The result was the "7-over-8" variety, even scarcer than the first type in the Brilliant Uncirculated quality we offer.
