Its 296,000 production was easily the lowest in the first seven years of the Morgan silver dollar series. The 1881-S San Francisco Morgan mintage was over 40 times higher! Due to the politics of the day, vastly more Comstock Lode silver was sent across the mountains to San Francisco, although the Carson City Mint was close by in Nevada. Today it's estimated that perhaps 1,000 circulated specimens exist in our Very Fine quality or higher.
