U.S. Morgan Silver Dollar 1884-S Extra Fine |
Beginning in 1878, the recently opened San Francisco Mint struck the finest circulation Morgan silver dollars. The state-of-the-art facility turned out what are universally regarded as the most beautiful examples of this famous type. The silver in these coins came from "bonanza mines" at such fabled Wild West sites as Comstock and Tombstone. But by the mid-1880s, these legendary mines were producing less silver so mintages fell dramatically. The 1884-S is one of the two scarcest S-mint Morgans from 1878-1891. In mint-state condition, experts estimate that fewer than 2,000 exist. In average BU quality, you could pay $10,000 or more for one! Perhaps as few as 42,000 may survive in Extra Fine quality or higher grades, but our XF price is less than 1% of the average BU price.
