There's probably no more fascinating variety in the Morgan series than this unique double-mintmark scarcity. The Carson City Mint closed in 1893 after a scandalous theft by employees. Years later, mint officials decided to send a few unused "CC" Morgan reverse dies to the principal Philadelphia Mint to remove their "CC" mintmarks and use them to strike a limited number of Morgan silver dollars. However, at least six of these dies were only partially effaced and ended up being punched with "O" (New Orleans) mintmarks over their still-visible "CC"! Very Fine quality. 38.1mm
