Byzantine 11th Century “Christ Portrait” Large Bronze
Late in the 11th century, resurgent Muslim armies threatened Constantinople. Emperor Alexius appealed to Christians of Western Europe and the First Crusade was formed, which succeeded in recapturing lost areas and entered Jerusalem. Struck in Constantinople in that era, this large bronze coin represents the distinctive Byzantine style. The obverse displays a portrait of Christ; the reverse inscription translates “Christ, King of Kings.” Very Good.
