Most affordable S-Mint Morgan BU from 1892-1904All but one of the San Francisco Mint Morgan dollar issues from the span 1892-1904 sell for several hundred to thousands of dollars each in Brilliant Uncirculated quality. The exception is the 1897-S issue, which is scarce in its own right but reasonably affordable. A silver dollar encyclopedia estimates that as few as 75,000 mint-state 1897-S Morgan dollars may survive. And the 1897-S issue is highly regarded for its excellent strikes, similar to the first 1878-1882 S-mintmark Morgan dollars. However, the 1897-S is vastly more elusive: over 50 times as many 1881-S BUs are estimated to exist.
