 Holy Land Terra-Cotta Oil Lamps, 100 B.C.-100 A.D.
This type of portable oil lamp was familiar in most households of the Roman Empire, including the Holy Land. And these may have been used during the life of Jesus. The large center hole would be filled with combustible oil — sometimes olive oil, which emits a pleasing fragrance when burning. A wick made of twisted fiber fit in the small hole at the tapered end (scorch marks still appear on most). A notch at the other end made it easily portable. Each is 3-3½” long.
