The main difference is that AU’s show a trace of wear at the highest points of a coin’s engravings. Even if just one point on a single side of the coin is affected, that’s enough for strict numismatists to reduce the grade to AU. Some dealers pass off AU “sliders” as mint-state quality, but our grading is very strict and we never sell AU’s as BU’s.
