Mexico’s Last “Cap and Ray” Silver Peso BU
The end of an honored North American tradition…
The Mexican Republic’s first silver dollar of 1824 adopted early U.S. Mint liberty cap designs for its “Libertad” cap (emblem of hard-won freedom). Intense rays blazing from Mexico’s sun-like liberty cap convey a passionate expression of freedom. The 19th century Mexican “Cap and Ray” silver dollar was legal tender in the U.S. until 1857 and continued to circulate informally in the ensuing years. This 1918-1945 last version altered the Cap and Ray design and added a beautiful laurel wreath. The Mexican Eagle destroying a snake on a cactus recalls the ancient Aztec legend of the founding site of Mexico’s capital city. Brilliant Uncirculated. Our choice of date.
