Scarcest First-Date 1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar VF: Merely 2% of Morgan silver dollars were struck at the isolated Carson City Mint in Nevada, situated near the Comstock Lode. Of the first-date 1878 Morgan dollar issues, the “CC” is the most elusive today in our nicely detailed Very Fine quality or higher grades. It was a day’s pay for a cowboy on the range. Most were held in reserve at banks and the overwhelming majority lost in U.S. Treasury silver melts of the 20th century.
Extremely Low-Mintage 1881-CC Morgan Silver Dollar VF: Its 296,000 production was easily the lowest in the first seven years of the Morgan silver dollar series. The 1881-S San Francisco Morgan mintage was over 40 times higher! Most of the newly struck coins were stored by the Treasury and released a generation later. Thus, in circulated grades, this issue is one of the scarcest in the series. A silver dollar encyclopedia estimates that only one circulated specimen may survive for every 50 mint-state issues.
Scarce Carson City 1892-CC Morgan Silver Dollar VF: As production at this small Nevada mint scaled down (much less silver than earlier was then being mined at the nearby Comstock Lode), its 1892 mintage of just 1,352,000 was the lowest Carson City Morgan dollar output since 1889. It’s estimated that as few as 70,000 may survive in our nicely detailed Very Fine quality or higher grades. The only scarcer 1890s Carson City Morgan dollar is the final 1893-CC issue
Last Carson City 1893-CC Morgan Silver Dollar VF: Only 677,000 were struck by the isolated Carson City Mint in 1893, before it closed after a scandal involving employee theft. In the twilight of the Wild West, the thieves were pursued by a posse. Perhaps fewer than 20,000 of this elusive issue survive today in our nicely detailed Very Fine quality or better. It’s the second rarest Carson City Morgan dollar issue. The coveted “CC” mintmark appears below the eagle and wreath. All come in nicely detailed Very Fine quality.
