U.S. “Date’s Key Scarcity” 1894-S Morgan Silver Dollar:
Morgan dollar mintages steeply plunged in the early 1890s and that decade includes most of the top rarities in the series. This 1894-S issue is very elusive and one of the key scarcities of “the rare decade.” A silver dollar encyclopedia estimates that perhaps less than 5% of its low 1.3 million mintage may survive in Very Fine quality or above. Mint-state quality is extremely scarce. Our clearly detailed Very Fine quality is sought-after in its own right.
U.S. “Date’s Key Scarcity” 1896-S Morgan Silver Dollar:
This San Francisco Mint issue is far and away the toughest to find Morgan dollar for the date. Most of the mintage was kept in Treasury bags and the vast majority lost in government melts. In mint-state quality, this S-mint issue is genuinely rare, selling for four figures when one turns up. That puts added pressure on circulated issues like our nicely detailed Very Fine quality. As few as 55,000 may exist in VF quality or better grades.
