U.S. 1898-S & 1900-S Morgan Silver Dollar Pair, Very Fine
S-mintmark Morgan dollar production went up in the later 1890s, but 1898 is still relatively scarce compared to early San Francisco issues. A silver dollar encyclopedia estimates that as few as 232,000 of the 1898-S Morgan may survive today in our nicely detailed Very Fine quality or higher grades. That easily makes it the scarcest issue for the date in VF or higher quality. Some early issues in the series are over 15 times as plentiful. Mint-state 1898-S Morgan specimens are rare and costly.
Of the three 1900 Morgan dollar mintages, the 3.5 million San Francisco production was by far the lowest. The vast majority of those were later lost in government melts. Today itís estimated that as little as 1% may exist in mint-state quality. Although more readily available, these issues are also quite scarce in circulated quality like the Very Fine specimens we are offering here. Far fewer survive in this condition than many other Morgan dates.
