Interesting Facts About the Eisenhower Silver Dollar:
-- Congress authorized the Eisenhower dollar series a little over a year after Ike's death in 1969. This "king" of U.S. presidential coins completed the denomination series honoring great American presidents which began with the Lincoln penny in 1909 and had extended to the Kennedy half dollar in 1964.
-- The Ike series was intended to revive the tradition of large 38mm dollar coins in American commerce (the last such U.S. coin had been struck in 1935). Because the price of silver was higher than previously, Ike dollars intended for commerce were clad in copper-nickel over a pure copper inner core.
-- The obverse of the Ike dollar displays the famous coin portrait of the beloved American general-president, who successfully filled both demanding roles in the tradition of George Washington. The inscription "LIBERTY" above Ike's portrait rings out with a special force on these coins.
-- On the reverse is the official Apollo 11 insignia of the American Eagle landing on the Moon, with the Earth in the background. It was a highly appropriate design, because America's triumphant space program had begun during Eisenhower's presidency.
-- The Ike dollar was minted from 1971-1978.

Silver Eisenhower dollars contain 40% (.3161 ounces) pure silver. Copper-nickel Eisenhower issues are .750 copper, .250 nickel bonded to an inner core of pure copper. All Eisenhower dollars are 38mm (1 inches) in diameter.
