Product Description
This big, bold copper coin is as impressive as the reign of the Empress under which it was struck. Born as Sophie in 1729 to a penniless Prussian Prince, the future Catherine the Great would later overthrow her husband, Peter III to become Russia's most powerful female leader. Influenced by Enlightenment ideals, under her control Russia entered its own Golden Age and became one of the great powers of Europe. Shown on the obverse are her elaborately monogrammed initials encircled by a wreath. The reverse features the double-headed eagle, emblem of the famous House of Romanov. Our Fine to Very Fine specimens are nicely preserved. No later Romanov coin could match its 44mm diameter and two-ounce heft.
