Congress authorized the Eisenhower dollar series a little over a year after Ike's death in 1969. The new series was intended to revive the tradition of large 38mm dollar coins in American commerce. (The last such U.S. coin had been struck in 1935.) The double-dated 1776-1976 "Bicentennial" issues were authorized by Congress for the Bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence. They feature a unique Liberty Bell/Moon reverse honoring America's triumphant space program begun during Eisenhower's presidency. These were the last in the series to be struck in 40% silver. Only 6% of all Ike dollars were struck in silver. Our set includes both the 1976 Brilliant Uncirculated and proof issues from the San Francisco mint.
