Republic of Ireland 1938-1968 "Hen with Chicks" Penny, BU Ireland's last big pennies disappeared from commerce decades ago. The charming "Hen with Chicks" engravings first appeared on Irish Free State pennies in 1928, part of the animal coin series selected by the famous poet-senator William Butler Yeats. On the reverse is the ancient Brian Boru harp, which resides at Trinity College, Dublin. The inscription Eire is Gaelic for Ireland, and the penny denomination also appears in Gaelic. Our Brilliant Uncirculated quality makes a great gift and good luck piece.
