Discontinued over a century ago, these "odd denominations" emerged during the Civil War era. The copper 2 cent piece was the first U.S. coin to carry the inscription "In God We Trust," suggested by a minister to help Union morale. Abundant laurel surrounds the Union Shield; arrows symbolize weapons of war. On the reverse is the 2 cent denomination encircled by sheaves of wheat. The nickel 3 cent piece was introduced after super-hard nickel was no longer critical for armaments. Its obverse presents a unique Liberty personification and its reverse a Roman numeral III (for the denomination) surrounded by laurel. Our well-traveled Good quality passed through many hands; the inscription "In God We Trust" is faint but perceptible on its banner.
