U.S. 1945 “Victory Year” Silver Mercury Dime and Walking Liberty Half Dollar Set
Struck by the U.S. Mint in the last year of World War II -- Very Fine Quality
Adolph Weinman’s famous dime and half dollar were introduced in 1916 during World War I. Due for retirement after 25 years’ service, these patriotic series were extended by Congress for the duration of World War II. The popular “Mercury” designation for the dime is actually a misnomer: it’s officially the “Winged Liberty Head” with Liberty’s cap meant to represent Freedom of Thought. During World War II, it was one of President Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms that our forces were defending. The joined rods of the reverse’s fasces stand for united strength. On the half dollar, the Walking Liberty is clad in the American flag. On the reverse a powerful American Eagle defends our freedoms. Nicely detailed Very Fine quality.
