  U.S. “Coronet Liberty” 3 Cent Nickel 1865-1889
Believe it or not, there once was a legal-tender U.S. 3 cent nickel!
Even in its own time, this unique issue was never very familiar, because only a limited number were struck. In a 25-date span just 32 million were issued by the U.S. Mint. The coin emerged from the Civil War and was principally intended as “postage stamp money.” Stamps were relatively new then and generally sold individually in post offices. The 3 cent coin could purchase a regular 3 cent stamp (the most commonly used) without the need of change. Featuring one of the prettiest Liberty designs in U.S. minting history, the 3 cent “Coronet Liberty” was first designed as an experimental cent pattern, prior to the adoption of the Indian Head cent. The reverse features a Roman numeral III with a laurel wreath. Well-traveled Good quality.
