U.S. Last 1976 "Ike" Silver Dollar
Revived the Traditional Size of U.S. Silver Dollars
The short-lived 1971-1976 Eisenhower silver dollars will always have a special place in American collecting. The portrait on the 1971-1976 Ike dollar is the largest of a president (or any real person) to appear on a regular-issue U.S. coin. Another reason is the unique status of the Ike silver dollar as "the last of a great breed" -- the traditional-size 38mm silver dollar series (although current U.S. commemorative silver dollars are the same size, each is issued for one year only). The last 1776-1976 Ike 40% silver dollar celebrated the American Bicentennial with a unique one-year reverse. The Liberty Bell appears before the Moon, suggesting two hundred years of American progress. After 1976, no other silver-clad Eisenhower dollars were issued.
