US 1923-D & 1923-S Peace Silver Dollars, BU
The 1923-D and 1923-S Peace silver dollars are surprisingly scarce in mint-state quality. An encylopedia of U.S. silver dollars estimates that as few as 34,000 of each may survive today in Brilliant Uncirculated grades, far less than 1% of original mintages.
Those are astoundingly low BU survival rates! In fact, more BU’s of the low-mintage 1921 Philadelphia Peace dollar are estimated to be extant: at least 44,000. Yet the 1921 Peace dollar BU sells for $450, and our sale prices for the 1923-D and 1923-S BU’s are $99 and $59 respectively.
The reason is that as few as 50,000 of the 1921 issue may survive in Very Fine or better circulated quality. But 500,000 of the 1923-D and 1,500,000 of the 1923-S Peace dollars exist in VF+ circulated grades. The 1921 issue is far scarcer overall. Similarly, since the 1923-D is much scarcer overall than the 1923-S, its BU’s command a higher price.
Why do so few BU’s survive from the 1923-D and 1923-S mintages? A very high proportion of these issues’ BU’s held in reserve at the Treasury and banks were later melted down in World War II. It was the luck of the draw.
For the best deal, buy both the 1923-D and 1923-S Peace silver dollar BU’s for only $149 (an added savings of $9).
